Ottawa’s Central Mosque and downtown Islamic Centre targets of mischief

(Ottawa – April 13, 2017) The Ottawa Muslim Association (OMA) and the Ottawa Islamic Care Centre were targeted by an individual the morning of Wednesday, April 12.

Windows were smashed at the two buildings. No one was hurt.

“It’s always distressing to see our places of worship targeted in this hateful way. We call on the police to investigate these incidents as potential hate crimes,”says Naeem Malik, President of the OMA association. “We know that such acts do not represent the sentiments of our fellow Ottawa neighbours and community members.”

The OMA mosque and several other Muslim institutions have been targeted before.

“It is important for community members to report suspicious activities to the police,” says Omar Mahfoudhi, executive director of the Islam Care Centre. “It has just gotten easier to report hate crimes through an online form the police are now providing. That should help people feel more comfortable coming forward.”

According to Statistics Canada, up to two-thirds of hate crime are unreported.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) maintains an online map documenting reported hate crimes and hate incidents in Canada. It also provides a Community Safety Guide on its website.
